HG635 'Super Router' not working with 2.4 Ghz devices

I have fibre broadband and an HG635  router. PC is connected by cable, iPad and iPhone to 5 Ghz wireless and 4 devices that used to  connect to 2.4 GHz wireless (Chromecast, Fire Stick, nook hd+ tablet and an LG phone.) A few months ago, the 2.4 Ghz devices stopped working giving error messages such as 'out of range' even when 2 inches from the router. A few days later they re-started, then stopped again and so on until now they never connect. I've given the 2 bands different SSIDs so it's clear to see on the Apple devices that there is no 2.4 Ghz signal.

Yesterday I wasted 2 hours with an online chat person who insisted on doing a line check and, long story short, said it must be working because the little green light was flashing. No amount of re-explanation of the issue could convince her. What is the point of employing people who will tell you black is white (or green) based on extensive knowledge of.....not much, certainly not dual band routers. Her final "help" was to send a link on router settings. Having tried 2 factory resets and everything else I could think of, this was no help at all and disregarded the fact that it used to work, then stopped. No settings had been changed, unless remotely by TT if that's possible.

Sadly, I have no hair worth speaking of, so pulling it out wasn't an option. Is it just my HG635, or is this a known fault which only a replacement router will solve? Any advice very welcome, thank you.
