Hello,
I recently signed up for the fibre large package and all is up and running now.
Speeds are pleasingly better than expected. I receive about 28down/7up.
Obviously this is not particularly high as far as 'fibre large' goes but I needed to be free of the upload cap as I work from home and the upload is important to my work.
Aside from work I use the line a lot for gaming on Xbox and I'm having some major latency issues when trying to play.
My ping is unstable and bounces around with 40-80ms+ spikes regularly (30sec intervals approx) and between these big spikes there are more frequent little spikes of approx 10ms (every 5secs or so). Every so often there will be lull and the ping will remain beautifully smooth for a minute and the games will play very well.
Obviously this wobbly ping doesn't make for a very smooth gaming experience so I'm hoping that an OCE can offer a suggestion.
I should probably add some details:
The engineer had to put a new line and master socket in so there is not an issue with old cabling, there are no other additional sockets linked to it. It all looks nice and tidy too.
I have the HG633 TalkTalk router and the Xbox One is in the DMZ, I have also tried it not in the DMZ.
I mostly play BO3 which is on dedicated servers in Ireland, to which the ping is approx 20ms when things are smooth.
I only play wired over ethernet. The wifi is completely disabled so nobody is chewing on my bandwidth or causing local congestion issues.
I have replaced all ethernet cables twice (from separate batches) so I know they aren't the problem.
I've tested the ping dozens of times at different times of the day with my computer (via ethernet) to multiple large servers (Google DNS, BBC, etc). The result is always the same, there are very short periods of smooth flat pings interspersed with erratic spikes regardless of the server I test on.
I play in a group with another TalkTalk user and some other-ISP users, obviously there is the occasional 'server lag' which we all see but the majority of the time it's just me with frequent in-game wobbling and general weirdness.
Any help is massively appreciated because I'm not sure what else to do.
My stats, if it helps, are as follows:
