Progressively worse speeds on Fibre, Talktalk router can't even connect anymore

I have been with talktalk for around 10 months after leaving BT late last year.

I have fibre optic broadband, which says should be around 18mbps.

To be honest I only used to get 14mbps with BT so I was expecting around that, however in the last few months the connection has deteriorated significantly. It got so bad that the talktalk router stopped connecting altogether. Talktalk sent out 2 replacement routers but both had the same issue.

A BT engineer was sent out and said that the line was fine and should be able to get 14-15mbps and that it must be the TT firmware.

In the end I gave up with the TT routers and bought a cheap router that could at least get me connected at around 12mbps, so with that I was relatively happy and I left it at that.

However since then the line has continued to get worse and now the speed is struggling more. I am now lucky to get around 8mbps. I am worried that soon I won't be able to stream anything and the line won't be fit for purpose.

Especially when, originally, I was supposed to be able to get double the current speed, and most people with normal broadband get better connections than my "superfast fibre".

Occasionally there is also crackling on the phone line, but not all of the time. There must be a fault on the line somewhere, but would that explain why the TT routers can't connect at all?
