Since upgrading around the start of December to medium fibre i have had a phone line fault over christmas and New year which got sorted.
However the router connection is slow via WIFI which is a common theme having looked around here.
I am on my second router and it is still the same and the customer service technical who i spoke too hasn't got a clue how to fix anything and was trying to tell me that my speed of 20mbps via wireless on a 38mbps connection is ok. In the end he just said he would send another router. This was after me telling him that i have a degree in I.T., which i do.
Anyway i set about testing my actual WIFI speed on the LAN by connecting laptop 1 via cable to the router and laptop 2 via the wireless. The wireless link speed was 65mbps and 135mbps depending on the 11n 40Mhz or 20Mhz setting in the wireless setting on the router.
I then copied over a movie of 1.7gb from laptop 1 to laptop 2.
Below are the results.
65Mbps
322secs to copy
1.7gb = 1700MB /322 5.2795- rough MB/s
There are 8 bits in a byte so we times by 8
5.2795 * 8 = 42.236Mbps wireless speed so ok
135Mbps
167secs to copy
1.7gb = 1700MB/167 10.179-rough MB/s
There are 8 bits in a byte so we times by 8
10.179* 8 = 81.4371Mbps wireless speed so ok
So the wireless speed is capable of giving out more than the medium fibre speed of 38mbps so i can only come to the conclusion that the router hardware just isn't up to the job of doing the modem and routing together.
Could be a lack of memory which has been suggested to buffer or slow memory or processor.
I would love to hear what Talktalk have to say on the matter and from anybody else.
Thanks
