What's wrong with my broadband?

About a month ago. I had a BT Openreach modem and behind it a TPLINK TL-WR1043ND acting as router. Then it stopped working - suddenly the Openreach modem would not supply a DHCP lease, I confirmed this by trying to connect directly to the modem from my computer ethernet. This lead me to believe that the problem was either with the line or with the Openreach modem.

TalkTalk customer service sent me a Huawei HG633 superrouter and stuff worked again. However, this router doesn't support modem mode like the Openreach modem does, so my preferred router is now acting as a glorified switch.

Without double-NATing, I'd like to use my TPLINK as the router. So I bought another Openreach modem on eBay. But this device presents exactly the same problem as the old Openreach modem - no DHCP lease.

So I'm wondering: can there be a fault with my line, such that the HG633 connects but the Openreach modems aren't happy, or did I just buy a faulty Openreach modem?

I should add that the HG633 fails to connect properly one in every 2-3 times and requires a reboot. Again, it's difficult to say whether it's the unit being unreliable or whether something is bad upstream.

Help appreciated.
