Good download speed - rubbish for playing games

i, have been with TalkTalk since LineOne which was before Tiscali. We have the high capacity fibre to cabinet broadband and generally manage to get good downoad speeds. We seem to be able to use Sky or Netfix to download fine without buffering. However xbox games are a nightmare with endless buffering and drop outs.

We have a HG635 router on software 1.06t, which I think means a slightly out of date router on the latest software. I know, because I have asked them that I can't currently move to BT Infinity as there is "insufficient capacity" on the cabinet. Maybe an over shared connection is my issue.

Anyway the issue seems to be significant loss of packets and a traceroot/ping time that escalates and escalates until we get so mad we walk away from the xboxes, so far they haven't gone through the window. We have tried with and without homeplugs, after router restarts - including the off for 20 minuts variety. We have tried with just one xbox or with both, we have tried with other things disconnected and not.

The router is plugged straight into the fiber socket with no landline attached and wih just a 1m cable between it and the wall socket.

Not sure if the picture attachement is going to work so some stats from my tracing today are below, the images show it much better though, bad for half an hour around 11am, bad again for about half an hour about 15:00 with quite common spikes of packet loss

The issue is we need to have the xboxes playable or my boys will kill me. Is the answer to bin TalkTalk or to change from the current router or what?

It can't be rocket science and others we know in and around the area, may with "slower" broadband seem to play on line quite happily.
