Internet keeps dropping out and speed erratic

Ok i can see from previous posts I'm not the only one. I  don't want to spend futile hours on the phone especially as i haven't got a phone contract so will be very expensive. I'm supposed to be getting and paying for superfast 72mps but am often getting just 5mps and rarely anything above 30. I've run dozens of wifi tests aps md they all confirm this. Occasionally it will hit 72. Very occasionally.

BUT the worst thing is the signal keeps dropping out. Sometimes several times a day and almost every day. Sometimes its only for ten seconds, sometimes a few minutes. The light on the router does not change colour when this happens. Not only is this really annoying because I listen to internet radio a lot and as it helps me fall asleep, others in the house play online with friends and are getting disconnected. All diagnostic test i take with talktalk says everything is tickertyboo. Well, it really isn't, so if someone at talktalk or community member can help sort it out I'd be very grateful. Thanks. Oh, the router is well positioned, there's nothing nearby to interfere with it and I've had no such issues on this line before, ever, going back to dial up times.

TT Hub queries - DNS Binding Protection + connection speed

Hi

I have recently upgraded to a TalkTalk Wi-Fi Hub (version SG4K10002808t), previously on a TT Super Router.  I run a media server in the home and following the upgrade have found there are some LAN connection issues to the server (Plex). Advice on the support forums for Plex indicates that this is usually attributed to router-based DNS Binding Protection - and that disabling or creating an exception for direct access to the server will resolve the matter.

So, here goes, does the Hub have DNS Binding Protection and can I add an exception to the router settings? Didn't have this issue with the Super Router, but don't really want to downgrade to older tech to resolve this?

For example, on DD-WRT based routers we would add

rebind-domain-ok=/plex.direct/

whereas if we are using pfSense’s internal DNS resolver service, we would add

server:
private-domain: "plex.direct"

With respect to the connection speed, I have noticed that the Hub Device Info is telling me that my Maximum downstream rate is just shy of 65K, but that my actual rate is 56K. Wired speed tests at the router tell me I am only getting on average 45K from there.

The line quality info on my old Super Router told me I had a downstream line rate of 65K (was this actual or not?). However, I'm sure we were getting better than 45K on speed tests - as I was getting over 50K on the network?

Many thanks

I have recently started using the Talktalk wireless hub, it is currently running on SG4K10002808t  software.  I understand a later update is available can I update this manually myself or must I request a manual update from a OCE.

DDOS Attack - VPN help please.

Hi all

I play on PS4 and currently facing daily DDOS attack by one particular gamer as we meet up in same game session always. Does anyone know what steps I should take?

Can someone help me figure out what VPN I should use/buy that works well with my Talktalk router HG633.

I have tried connecting my PS4 to my Laptop and tried 3 different VPN services to no avail. When sharing the VPN with PS4 my Playstation seems unable to find any type of connection. Makes me think HG633 doesn't work with some VPN's.

I heard an ASUS router can help but I assume this is a wireless router and I was hoping for a LAN type of router. I'm new to all this and apologies if terms/words are incorrect but hope someone can help me find a solution.

I need to play on PS4 without getting DDOSed!!

Regards

New hub and You View

Just connected new hub.  It is working .  But one problem.  You View box will not connect to router.  It worked well with old hub.  It connects with an ether cable because it is in a different room to hub.  The tv the box is connected to is working normally but I cannot access the previous programmes.  The box is not one that records programmes.  What am I doing wrong or not doing that I should be doing.

Help setting up home network

I have the new wifi router which is currently attached to cat 5e cable of around 20m running from a/b connections on my openreach master socket, nothing is attached directly to the socket. This worked fine with the old router but now like many who have posted to the forum I am getting various speeds from 2mbps to 72mbps on my wifi tablets. Cannot check the speed to my hard wired connections as they are to TV's etc and I do not have hard wire computer.

If I talk to support I am told everything is working properly and I should plug my router directly to the master socket, point taken. However my master socket is in my bedroom so to connect my televisions and now boxes I would need to use wifi which is not good at the distance to the furthest one through two floors and 3 walls (one clad with aluminium foil). Also I would need to have  powerline connectors for 2 TV boxes and 2 sound bars.

To finally get to my question unless I wish to risk a costly openreach callout I need to find another solution and wonder if the following could be made to work?

Leave the spur in place to run telephone connection only and connect my router direct to master socket, connect a network switch to provide further rj45 connections to provide hardwired connections to the floor below. I would still need to run  20m plus cat5e connections to my conservatory at the other side of the house for 3 devices. Could this be done by running a single wire to a second network switch or second old talktalk router to run all three devices or perhaps a single pair of powerline adaptors to the switch/router?

If I am still getting the constant variation in speed then I could push for an openreach engineer to check the line.

Sorry for the length of this post or if this has been covered before.

Speed Drop

Hi,

Over the last couple of years my download speed has typically been 65-71 mbps.

However, for the last 5 days it has dropped to typically 45-50 mbps and on occasions around 21mbps.

I have rebooted the router with a 45minute wait before power-up and tested with an ethernet cable and from the BT test socket via a plug-in filter with no improvement.

The tests have been carried out on 2 different laptops and a tablet all with the same results.

Can you help me get my speed back?

Many thanks.

Why in 2020 is every client being treated like they have never used a broadband router of any sorts.

Spent ages going back and fourth with a operator for them to get obsessed with lights on a router with me explaining what was needed to be done (BECAUSE ITS BEEN DONE 10 TIMES SINCE USING THIS SERVICE) It doesn't matter which router I'm on Phil/Bob/Dorothy or Tim the problem is always my line. We live 6 miles from the exchange we deal with the same thing every year, high winds poor line quality, attenuation builds in the line, drop offs router tries to connect for the millionth time, line stops getting a connection. I contact Phil/Bob/Dorothy or Tim and they argue back and fourth about what lights on the router, I tell them unless you have 'reset the profile' it will be the same. 'BUT SIR I need to check what model number you have on your separate modem' I don't have one your not listening, the last time I got rude responses this time I gave short replies in which they were ignored. Sick of it now.

What magic words do I need to let 'must read through the manual' crew to do a 'simple reset to a profile'

Been with this service 6+ years starting to think I'd be better paying the premium and talking to what feels like someone who can take basic instruction at BT.

Beyond frustrated.

No sign of superfast fibre boost after 4 days

So I have a faster fibre account promising download speeds of 36mbs albeit have never achieved better than say download 30mbs and upload 7mbs when carrying out hard-wired speed tests. I also now have the new TalkTalk WiFi hub and have checked that both 2.5 and 5.0 ghz channels are operational.

Given our currently available speed I agreed what I understood to be a superfast fibre boost where the chat technician suggested we would get download speeds of up to 64mbs albeit appreciate this is a maximum and average speed will be lower than this.

Day 4 of the boost and NO increase in speed despite 4 sessions now with the TalkTalk chat team. I have turned off the router on 2 occasions over the past 4 days for several hours to reset the system which has not helped and assume the DLM should have settled down by now to our increased speed.

When I log into our new router it is telling me that max download speed is circa 34mbs despite the boost which the chat team tell me they can see in my account. Line tests are not highlighting any issues.

I am running out of ideas other than running a new temporary CW1308 twisted cable from the incoming BT box direct to the router however am not convinced the problem is with the internal wiring given I am already achieving circa 30mbs......

Any ideas or suggestions gratefully received given I am struggling to get much useful help out of the chat team?

Extender slowing down rapidly

I have the TalkTalk extender kit in my lounge as the main router is in my bedroom at the other end of my flat. (No choice, that’s where the phone line is). I’m also on the fast fibre plan.

I get full speed on the main router no problem, but the extender in rather sketchy. If I reboot it I get great speed, but often within a few hours it drop significantly to around 5mbps.

I have separated the 2.4ghz and 5ghz bands and both behave the same way. I’ve used an analyser and set both bands to appropriately free channels (that do not clash with the router) but the speed still drops until I reboot the extender.

Strangely my upload speed doesn’t appear to be affected. In fact, it’s often faster than my download speed!

FWIW the extender sits behind my TV as it feeds my TV, YouView box and fire stick over  Ethernet. I also have a secondary cordless phone (base station in the bedroom) nearby. However, I believe this shouldn’t affect the 5ghz channel.

Any thoughts?

Hello, I have noticed my fibre speed has dropped a lot since yesterday. It may have been a few each days before that as it was OK last weekend. Have been through the guides to troubleshoot the problem and nothing has  changed.

Just done another speedtest on PC and on my Mobile phone (using wireless)

Any help welcomed. I have been using fibre for over  a month now.

Have chatted to an agent online about this as well. Using the community for additional help

speed boost.

Still no sign of superfast fibre boost after 5 days.......

I have recently upgraded to faster fibre with speed boost and Chat tell me that the boost is visible in my account. I cannot get over 30mbs, the boost was to give me 64mbs. TalkTalk says that the boost is active, I have been through Chat 4 times now with no success and noted below the other checks. Help please anyone given I now suspect that speeds greater than 30mbs are just not available where I live despite the fact that TalkTalk sell the service.

Big Drop In Speed Lately. Help?

I have Fibre Boardband with Speed Boost package.

Should be getting 60-70MB but the test on this page:

https://www.talktalk.co.uk/speedcheck/

I use Wired Connections for both my Computers, not cheap ethernet cables either.

These speeds below are when computer is idle and running hardly anything.

Shows I'm only getting 7MB and my Upload Speed is 12-13MB, when the hell is Upload Speed ever faster than Download Speed with any provider?

My Ping ms is at 47? Normally 10-20..

Also for about week now, maybe longer not sure. Videos on the internet (youtube, bbc iplayer, crunchyroll, etc) have a 5-10 second delay before the video starts playing. Like it struggles to buffer and load quick which shouldn't be a problem at all even at 1080p.

NOTE: Have 2 quite powerful PC's and when just using any of them to watch videos. Lag..

Please can anybody help sort this ASAP.
