Hi
I'm not sure if this is the place for business broadband issues but I've seen the same problem discussed here, so I figured it was OK.
I moved my phone and broadband service to TalkTalk at the end of July, having previously been an old Freedom2Surf customer. I was on standard ADSL Max with a TT supplied HG533 router for 2 weeks before the upgrade to fibre, during which time static routes were working fine.
With the upgrade to fibre, I received an HG635 Super Router, which was pretty unstable and static routes weren't working. I put in a support call to TT and was told I'd be called back within 2-3 days. I wasn't called back and within a week of the fibre upgrade, the router dies entirely and wouldn't boot. I called TT and they sent a replacement.
The replacement is thankfully stable, but static routing still doesn't work. I work from home a lot and use a VPN server on my network to reach my office IP ranges. I use static routes on my DSL router to redirect traffic for the work IP ranges to my VPN server, instead of going out over internet.
When I discovered this issue, I Googled and found it was discussed a lot on this forum, such as the following:
- http://community.talktalk.co.uk/t5/Superpowered-Fibre-Broadband/Static-routing-not-working-correctly-on-hg635-super-router/td-p/1514493
In both cases, the routers were using firmware v 1.04t and upgrading to 1.06t resolved the issue, as far as I understand it.
My router is running version 1.04ttb and hasn't updated. The recommendation was to factory reset the router and wait for 24-48 hours, which I did and it still didn't update. Having spoken to TT again, the support guy advised that if I did that and it didn't update, then I'm on the latest version available. Since others are using 1.06t, I'm not sure I believe that but if that's the company line, I'm at a dead-end. Perhaps 1.06t is the latest for home users and 1.04ttb is the latest for business customers.
Router system information says:
- Product type: HG635
- Hardware version: G.1.01
- Software version: v1.04ttb
Static routes are set up as follows:
- Destination Network Address: 10.10.10.0
- Destination Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
- Default gateway: 10.2.4.10
- Source IP Address: 10.2.4.0 (have also tried without source IP and subnet mask)
- Source Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
- Interface: Ethernet (setting to anything other than Ethernet seems to break all outbound traffic)
- Metric: -1 (the default. Have also tried setting to 1, 2, 10, 20 etc)
Either way, traffic to private IP ranges that should be sent over the VPN is instead getting sent out over the Internet by the router and getting dropped (since they're not public routable ranges) as confirmed by a traceroute.
TR069 remote management is enabled but there is no ACS username or ACS password set. Connection request usename is "userid" and Connection request password is set to something 20 chars long. I don't know if these settings are normal or not.
Does anyone have any advice, either about whether I've misconfigured the static routes, or what is the latest firmware for the HG635 Super Router for business customers? Screenshots etc available on request.
My only alternative is to buy a new router. Not the end of the world, but I would have thought a DSL router supplied to businesses would be capable of static routing. That's pretty poor.
